The easiest way to put a Terminal Server into install mode is to open a command prompt and use the change user commands.

To find out what mode the Terminal Server is in, use the /query switch.

c:>change user /query

To put the Terminal Server into Install mode, use the /install switch.

c:>change user /install

You should now install your applications.  Once completed, switch the mode back to Application Execute.

To put the Terminal Server into Application Execute mode, use the /execute switch.

c:>change user /execute

Open the machine menu, and select New…

The New Virtual Machine Wizard will launch, click the next button to get started.

The next screen allows you to enter a name for the virtual machine and select the host operating system.  This is the name that you will see in the list of virtual machines on your system. 

You now need to determine how much RAM will be allocated to your virtual machine.  What you enter here will depend on the operating system you have chosen, as well as the amount of RAM on the host machine.

This step allows you to select or create the virtual hard disk for the virtual machine.

Choosing to create a new hard disk will launch the Create New Virtual Disk Wizard.

There are two options when creating a new virtual hard disk, dynamically expanding or fixed storage. 

Next you will select the location and maximum size of the virtual hard disk, the default directory location is in here:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\.VirtualBox\HardDisks

You will be presented with a summary screen, at which point you should click the Finish button.

The virtual machine has now been created, and should appear in the list of virtual machines on your system.

Call the utility by going to the run window and typing in cleanmgr

Select the drive you would like to recover space on

Disk Cleanup will calculate how much space can be recovered

Select the files you want to delete, make sure the Compress old files option is selected.

The utility will run (it could take a while)

Once it finishes, you could have considerably more diskspace.  I “thought” I was keeping my c drive lean, cleaning up old files, temp space, etc…  I was still plagued by low disk space on the c drive, typically around 500mb free.  After running this utility I had 10 gb!  If you are running out of room on a drive, and have tried to clean it up to no avail, try this utility.

To Turn this on or off:

1. Open Outlook

2. Go to the Tools menu and select Options…

3. Select the Preferences Tab if it is not already

4. Click the E-mail Options button

5. Click Advanced E-mail Options

6. Check or uncheck the Display a New Mail Desktop Alert checkbox

The Sun xVM VirtualBox site offers a free download for personal and evaluation use and I have found it to be a great tool, at least for my own limited requirements.

I run Windows XP on my laptop, and often have to deal with Clients and users who are running Windows Vista.  I used to have a dual boot system, so that if needed I could shut down XP and reboot into Vista, thank God those days are over!

Running the Sun xVM VirtualBox software allowed me to create a virtual machine running Windows Vista that I can now turn on when I need to without logging out of my working XP environment.
